How the San Diego Zoo Started
On September 16, 1916, Dr. Harry Wegeforth, a physician, was driving through the place that is now Balboa Park.  He heard a roar of a lion from the Panama California Exposition. Dr. Harry thought San Diego needed a zoo, so he started one. He began with the animals left over from the exposition. Dr. Harry Wegeforth was a genius at collecting money, plants and animals. He traveled around the world finding animals and plants from other countries and bringing them over and making a good business with  other zoos. Today there are over 850 types of animals and over 6,500 varieties of plants at the San Diego Zoo.  By Crystal, Gr. 9
The Zoological Society of San Diego is dedicated to conserving endangered species and their habitats. It works globally for research about animals.  The Zoological Society manages the one hundred acre San Diego Zoo and the eighteen hundred acre San Diego Wild Animal Park.  Our San Diego Zoo is also working to establish field stations in five ecological areas globally.  There are over 250,000 members of the zoo, mostly from San Diego County, subscribed to Zoonooz magazine each month. San Diego Zoological Society works locally because it brings tourists to San Diego and gives us more jobs. It also gives San Diego recognition, fame and a world significance.  The Zoo is global, because its purpose is to protect wildlife and habitats around the world. It proposes action that will bring about recovery for endangered animal species.

Biodiversity is a global issue requiring local action through joint partnerships with the involvement of the local community and also larger organizations. The zoo recognizes the contribution of all those that have a role  including  local agencies, community groups, local businesses and farmers.

The zoo promotes  the enjoyment of visitors and education.  It will also  continue scientific research for conservation of  animals.       By Miles and Christina, Gr. 9
